CLINTON, WI - FAMILY DENTISTRY WITH A GENTLE TOUCH

Children’s Dentistry

At Clinton Family Dental, we believe in building relationships with our young patients, so they feel comfortable when they visit our kid-friendly office. We provide comprehensive children's dentistry services for infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and adolescents with an emphasis on prevention to keep dental disease at bay.

Dr. Jacobson and her team follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's guidelines and recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit when the first tooth erupts and no later than the first birthday. Maintaining healthy teeth from a young age helps set the stage for long-term oral health.

Children’s Dental Exams and Cleanings

Dental Exam: Depending on your child's needs, we may take digital x-rays to reveal problems under the gums or between the teeth. Dr. Jacobson will evaluate your little one's teeth and gums and ensure the development is on track. If the x-rays and exams reveal tooth decay, gum disease, or other concerns, Dr. Jacobson may recommend prompt treatment to restore your little one's healthy smile.

Dental Cleaning: From around ages 3-4, our dental hygienist will gently clean your child's teeth to remove any plaque or tartar deposits. Dental cleanings have been shown to significantly lower the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. We may also recommend a fluoride treatment to help prevent cavities. Our team loves to demonstrate how to brush and floss to keep those pearly whites shiny and bright.

Additional Children's Services

Here's a look at some additional services we offer our young patients:

Dental Sealants: The chewing surfaces of your child's permanent molars and premolars have tiny grooves and crevices that trap bacteria, plaque, and food debris, often leading to cavities. Dental sealants are protective coatings that essentially "seal" the tooth surfaces, reducing the risk of tooth decay.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF): The active ingredients in SDF are fluoride and silver particles. Silver is an antimicrobial agent, while fluoride remineralizes the tooth enamel, lowering the risk of tooth decay. SDF offers an alternative, non-invasive option to halt the progression of cavities in baby teeth until a child is ready for a traditional dental filling or the affected tooth falls out naturally.

Space Maintainers: Baby teeth act as placeholders, maintaining the space the permanent teeth need and guiding them to come in correctly. If a tooth is lost prematurely, the remaining teeth may shift toward the gap, leading to crooked or crowded adult teeth. Dr. Jacobson may recommend a space maintainer to prevent the teeth from shifting, reducing, or even eliminating the need for future orthodontic treatment.
