What Are the Types of Dentures?

We are happy to offer complete and partial dentures. Complete removable dentures provide an affordable solution to replace all your missing teeth in your upper or lower arch. Partial dentures, on the other hand, offer a tooth replacement solution for patients who still have some healthy teeth.

Complete Dentures: There are two main types of complete or full dentures - immediate and conventional.

● Immediate dentures are created in advance and placed in the mouth after removing any remaining teeth. The gums and jawbone change shape as the area heals, so your replacement teeth will need relining and adjustments to continue to fit and function. They are best used as interim restorations until you are ready for conventional dentures.
● Conventional dentures are created after the area heals, allowing us to customize your restoration. They take into account the subtle details of your mouth and bite, providing a better fit and function. Conventional dentures offer a long-term tooth replacement solution, enhancing your smile. However, they only provide 20% of the chewing force of your natural teeth.
● Implant-supported dentures (overdentures) are created after the area heals and the implants are placed. They have “buttons” that allow the dentures to snap into place and provide the best stability, esthetics, and function. Since patients often have trouble adjusting to a lower denture due to tongue and muscle movements, we often recommend lower overdentures.

Partial Dentures: We are pleased to offer traditional and flexible partial dentures.

● Traditional partial dentures consist of replacement teeth secured to metal frameworks. They attach to remaining healthy teeth using metal clasps or precision attachments.
● Flexible partials are made from a soft, flexible material and use attachments that hold onto the gum tissues rather than metal clasps. Even though they are comfortable, flexible partials are not as customizable or durable as traditional dental bridges or partial dentures.

Implant-Supported Dentures

If you’re worried about dentures slipping, shifting, or causing discomfort, you may want to consider implant-supported dentures. Rather than relying on suction or facial muscles for support as with traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures are secured to a number of dental implants, providing enhanced comfort and function.

Aside from their stability and durability, implant-supported dentures help prevent bone loss and maintain your natural facial structure. Implant dentistry is today’s gold standard for replacing missing teeth, delivering results second only to healthy, natural teeth.
